Question: my 6 an 8 year olds both have small brown spots that are flat (not raised) on their skin

Unless you have some disease running in your family,it is probably harmless

Detailed Answer:

I have gone through the details and have checked the attached image. There is one thing to be asked - whether it blanches when pressed. If it blanches, in all probabilites it is a hemangioma. It is a harmless proliferation of blood vessels under the skin. It is often present right from the birth and is not a cause for concern. In case it does not blanch, once again there are is some thing to ask - whether you have any neurological disease running in your family. If not, you can safely assume it to be a congenital nevus, a harmless deposition of pigment cells under the skin. If yes, these may be cafe au lait spots of something related.

In short, unless you have some disease running in your family, it is probably harmless.
