Question: I went into ER Sunday with fever ofo 102.3, violent cough, sore lungs and throat, and shortness of breath. I was sure I had pneumonia, and was hoping for chest x-ray, nebulizer treatment, and prescriptions for anti-biotics, albuterol, prednisone. The doctor just took a quick look at my throat and gave me zithromycin. It is now Wednesday, and my fever is down but I still have the cough and shortness of breath. I also now have a stuffy nose. I am wondering if I should go to the clinic. They said that they do the minimum in ER and to go to my clinic if I am not better in 3 days. Or, is it just changing to a cold? The cough still kept me up last night which seems too long.
Brief Answer:
Get evaluated if symptom persists
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I went through your query and understood your concerns.
Presence of cough with shortness of breath always doesn't mean pneumonia. Since the doctors at ER evaluated your throat before starting antibiotic, they considered URTI (upper respiratory tract infection) as the likely diagnosis. Since you have no more fever, it indicates that you are getting better with the antibiotic therapy.
You can try steam inhalation and over the counter antihistamines such as benadryl. If breathlessness and cough continue to persist, you can go to the clinic for detailed chest examination. Bronchodilator can be helpful; but should be prescribed only after a detailed chest examination.
Hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask if any further related query. I will be glade to answer them.
Wish you a good health.
