What Causes Sore Throat After Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Mar 2016
Question: Hi doc

Quick question , I have had a bit of a sore throat for past 7-10 days now
at this point it is getting better and almost gone but Im a bit concern if this could be ARS. I have a lot of sex partners ( Women ) On the 19th or 20th of this month
( January ) was little different cause after I had sex with a working girl ( From Korea ) I noticed a fairly deep and fresh paper-cut about one centimeter in length on my finger that I used for fingering this girl for good 5 minutes. I cant verify if this cut happened before sex or after , I noticed it about 30-60 minutes after I had sex .
We had lots of mutual Oral sex ( unprotected ) and vaginal sex ( protected )

A few days later I started to get a bit of a sore throat , about 3-5 days ago I begone
to feel a bit of soreness below the chin bone ( picture attached ) I am thinking it could be my lymph node . I tried feeling for lumps , but I cant feel nothing, I cant really see no viable lumps . I have no temperature , I feel pretty good other than slight sore throat.

I know one of the doctors mentioned that certainly there is a slight possibility for infection if the girl was indeed was HIV positive , but he said the chance is very small.

So question is does this sound like ARS ?

Can this be oral gonorrhea or chlamydia ?

I get tested every 3-4 months and I m not due for another test till March.
Normally I would not be anxious, but certainly when it comes to cut finger and
vaginal fluid it certainly puts me on the edge a bit.

Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
It's unlikely to be ARS but yes, since you had a sexual exposure with a girl of unknown status, so chances of contracting HIV are there.
In fact, i would say, why only HIV. You are at risk of suffering from any Sexually transmitted disease (STD) like Gonorrhea, Chlamydia.
Presence of a lymph node signifies infection and that could be bacterial or viral in origin.
In such case, we usually treat our patients with Antibiotic like Doxycycline which covers all the atypical infections and most of the STD's as well.
Apart from this, you should carry on with warm saline gargles and anti allergics like Levocetrizine as there are strong chances that you might be simply having a Viral sore throat, complicated by secondary bacterial infection.
So, i suppose, there is no harm in taking Doxycycline and after your recovery, you should discuss with your doctor to run STD Panel, to rule out any STD in case you have which could be treated without a delay.
I would highly recommend you to use condoms for sexual activities and would advice you to avoid sexual contacts with multiple partners with unknown HIV status.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

See doc , i never had any inflammation of lymph nodes before , quite honestly i dont even know what it looks like . When i look up on internet
They show people with huge lumps on their necks. Me , i dont feel any lumps , i dont see any lumps, just a bit of sourness under my chin and kinda a near my throat.

With ARS do lymph nodes get huge ? Visibly huge?

As far as chlamydia and Ganareah ,
I do not have any discomfort in the penis area
Nor any discharge .

Im afraid of taking antibiotics because this would mean my wife has to take them too .
This would not be a good idea .

Brief Answer:
Wait and Watch

Detailed Answer:
Hello, It's not that any large lymph node is only a sign of ARS. However, small lymph nodes are associated with any viral infection or sore throat.
Any person suffering from HIV can be small to large lymph nodes.
We consider significant lymphadenpathy, if lymph nodes are more then 3 and more then 0.5 cms.
If you don't want to take antibiotics then you should wait and watch for 5 more days.
If all this resolves, then it's fine but if this doesn't resolve, see your doctor and get prescription of antibiotics.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Doc , its been 14 days since my exposure ,
And I am feeling like im getting a flue ,
I dont have fever but i got stuffy nose ,
My throat is scratchy a bit , and i still feel
Something under my chin .
Sore throat seems like its getting closer to
My lungs and makes me cough little bit.

Can this be ARS ?

With Ars do people get stuffy nose ?

If I take RNA test now is it 90% accurate at
2 weeks exposure ?

I am quite scared to even take the test ...

Brief Answer:
Can't be said with certainity

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
ARS can be seen with varied presentations and stuffy nose, lymph nodes, sore throat, cough , or any such illness could be the presenting symptom.
So, it's difficult to comment that you have simple Upper Respiratory tract infection or ARS. Since you had an exposure, so we can't virtually rule out ARS.
I would say, that you can go ahead for RNA PCR test as well as P24 antigen test, that would not be 100% conclusive but still would give you a direction.
In case you are found to be positive for HIV, you can start an early treatment, and if you are negative then probably you don't have HIV. However, conclusive test needs to be done after 6 weeks of exposure with HIV Antibody 1 & 2 with ELISA technique.
Please feel comfortable to ask me, if you have any further query.

Let me ask you ,
Do people get get ars before the 14 days ?
I was getting this soar throat and light cough days after possible Exposure .

So again question is do you see people with symptoms of ars just 3-4-5 days after exposure ?

Also , is the flue like symptoms related to ARS contagious to others ? Is this a real flue ?
Can i give this flue to my family members for example ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Anshul Varshney (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, it is seen

Detailed Answer:
First of all, the presentation of ARS is very rare in the initial days of contracting the infection because, patient usually presents late with other symptoms.
Flu like symptoms are mostly ignored by people and only people who know about it's relation with HIV are worried.
Rest people don't know about the relationship between flu symptoms and HIV. So, the presentation at a doctor's clinic for this purpose is very rare.
So, it is possible and i have seen few people presenting in ARS as early as in initial 3-5 days. It all depends on one's immunity.
ARS can be communicable if it is due to secondary infection caused by low immunity due to HIV.
HIV never spreads by direct contact.
So, you can pass any flu to your family member.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Let me ask you ,
Is there some vitamins or herbs I can take on daily basis
that they have studied to help prevent HIV virus to get attached to the T cells ?

Any remedies ?

And obviously I understand there is no cure , but sometimes there are minor things
person can do to help ones body fight the possible infection .

Brief Answer:
Get tested.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX first of all there are no vitamins or herbs which have been approved for treatment of HIV so I really don't recommend any.
But first of all you need to get tested to be sure that you really have HIV or you are just worried unnecessarily.
So get tested and be sure.
Good luck.
