What Causes Sore Throat And Stuffy Nose After Having Sulfa Tri?

Question: My.5 year old was given sulfa tri whatever for a uti last saturday. She took 3 doses and developed a light pink ski. Tone rash and was given a different antibiotic. It is now 5 days later and she has developed a cough, sore throat and stuffy nose. Should I be concerned about XXXXXXX XXXXXXX syndrom?
Brief Answer:
Seems like an intercurrent viral upper respiratory infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi....This seems like an inter-current viral illness. This is not related to the sulpha drug allergy. Not stevens XXXXXXX syndrome. Usually it presents with mucocutaneous skin lesions.
But I commend you about the expectation about stevens XXXXXXX syndrome. Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do. Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly, that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

She woke up this morning with a fever between 100.5-103 depending on when taken. Should we take her to urgent care? Should we wait it out? Does this resemble sj?
Brief Answer:
Viral illness and do not worry if there are no red flag signs
Detailed Answer:
Hi...Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.
I will tell you the dangers signs or red flag signs, as to when you need to worry with fever -
1. Poor feeding
2. Decreased urine output
3. Breathlessness
4. Fits
5. Rashes
6. Drowsiness/ Excessive lethargy
If these re not there, you need not take her to emergency care.
This doesn't resemble SJ. More over SJ presents more with skin manifestations like skin peeling or reddening around the lips and eyes and anal region (mucocutaneous junctions).
