What Causes Sore Throat And White Spot Above The Tonsil Despite Treatment?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: Last week my left tonsil was inflamed and red. After closer inspection, yesterday , I noticed a few small tonsil stones, which I removed using a q-tip. However, this morning I woke up with a sore throat and a white spot above my tonsil. This spot is fleshy and does not appear to be a stone. Is this due to me further irritating the area or something I should see a doctor about?

Brief Answer:
probable due to the irritation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I am Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

I believe that the new spot is due to irritation/injury while manipulating the tonsilloliths (tonsil stones).

-Do you have a fever? or any other symptoms like cough, rashes?
- the sore throat- is the pain over your left tonsil or your whole throat?

I recommend-

- Gargling with mildly salted warm water (a pinch in about 150ml of tolerable warm water)
- gargle with dissolvable aspirin twice a day and spit it out , do not swallow it . (this is to be done if pain is very severe)
- Vitamin C (500 mg) once a day in the mornings for 10 days with breakfast (avoid this if you have gastritis)
- monitor your tonsil and throat (take a picture every morning)- the white spot should go away in 2-4 days.
If it does not, or your pain worsens and the spot becomes bigger, you have a fever (more than 100 F) or more spots, see your physician right away for a throat swab to check for strep. throat.
Else, just take rest, hydrate with warm fluids, avoid sugary/iced/carbonated drinks.
Rinse out your mouth (brush if possible) after every meal, to avoid giving bacteria a comfortable environment to multiply.

Hope this helps. please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you good health,

Regards,
Dr.Shuba Hariprasad
