Brief Answer:
if it's tonsillitis then he can stay home unless complications occur

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

sore throat and white spots on the tonsils are signs of tonsillitis. Uncomplicated tonsillitis can be safely treated at home and amoxicillin is a good choice, provided that he hasn't used it recently (in the last 3 months). Complications like abscess formation, otitis, etc require medical attention. Lack of improvement after 3-5 days is another reason for a medical visit.

Sometimes viruses cause it, so no antibiotic may help. Epstein-Barr virus is one of them and causes infectious mononucleosis. Your doctor may detect signs of infectious mononucleosis during clinical examination. In that case amoxicillin may cause a rash.

Fatigue is a common symptom in tonsillitis.

So unless you've seen anything strange like uneven swelling on his throat or signs of more severe disease with decreased consciousness, very low blood pressure, faintness, etc you can wait for 1-2 more days.

I hope it helps!
