Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: i have an enlarged spleen frim ebv. it is 15.1 cm. I have a quick question. Last night I was rushing somewhere and I ran into a door handle right where my spleen is. It's definitely very sore this morning but I'm not in any agonizing pain. If something was wrong would I know...like would the pain be much worse?

Brief Answer:
THERE ARE FEW POSSIBILITIES....!

Detailed Answer:
Hi! thanks for your query!

After going through the history of your enlarged spleen, recent trauma and soreness in the left hypochondrium thereafter, I would consider two possibilities:

1. injury to the rib cartilages saving the spleen

2. minor trauma to the splenic capsule resulting in some small tears and a small hematoma

In splenic rupture, the symptoms are very urgent, shocking, fainting and the pain is very severe; however, delayed rupture of the spleen is also known therefore, you need to take bed rest and if possible go for ultrasonography of the region...

will possibility number 2 get worse? what are the symptoms for that..my spleen just feels sore
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (10 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
NO! MINOR TEARS HEAL THEMSELVES!

Detailed Answer:
Hi! minor splenic tears usually get sealed and healed by themselves within 3 to 7 days provided it is in rest and take caution not to get infected there by rubbing etc and also take penicillin group of antibiotics...

Without physical /clinical examination you cannot say that your spleen is tender; it is a deep organ and there are clinical methods to demonstrate it. Therefore it is worthwhile to see a physician, if needed, for confirmation. In other words, I will encourage you to see a physician and get examined if the pain and soreness doesn't get better.

I'm scared about delayed bleeding..
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Then you have to take few measures!

Detailed Answer:
Hi! then please take absolute bed rest, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, NSAIDS and do blood tests especially platelet count so that no more new bleeding occurs..!

It is very rare and I think not to worry about that; please keep contact also with your primary doctor and get ultrasonographic evaluation of the spleen for relief...!

nsaids? what else can I do to help my spleen
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
ANALGESICS LIKE PARACETAMOL/IBUPROFEN ETC...!

Detailed Answer:
NSAIDS are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like paracetamol, aspirin, paracetamol etc.

You can take a combination of paracetamol, ibuprofen and serratiopeptidase after light food to induce rapid healing...also take famotidine/ranitidine before the foods to prevent gastric irritation

That's all, I think!

ALL THE BEST!

is the spleen located on the side of the body because that's where they took the ultrasound from..also can my cats or dogs catch epstein barr virus from drinking after me
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (27 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Partly true !

Detailed Answer:
Hi! the spleen is deep inside the rib cage and partly covered by the lungs and the stomach; it is diagonally situated, more towards the left side...

Animals/pets cannot have EBV by drinking or even biting you...

Not to worry!

sir..when you take an ultrasound of the spleen, is it taken directly from the side? he took no images from my front where the pain is right below my breast. they said my spleen is normal size now so why am u waning up with discomfort....
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Everything is okay!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Ultrasound can be performed from any angle but generally all views are examined to exclude any chance of missing the disease...!

Your spleen is normal therefore now relax and just wait or take cold/ice compress over the painful area for comfort...the pain is in the lower rib cage or the cartilages which are not studied with USG but minor trauma causes severe pain...

would they be able to see a tare in the spleen
doctor
Answered by Dr. S. Samanta (31 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
The tear might be healed or sealed!

Detailed Answer:
Hi! generally they are able to capture any splenic tear but in case the tear is healed or sealed due to your body's immunity it is not possible to see that anymore...

Anyways, it is a good sign..
