What Causes Spitting Up Blood Along With Sleeplessness?

My mother-in-law is 58 years old and is visiting us here in the states from Europe. She said that today she was just sitting around and all of a sudden her mouth just filled with a salty taste. She went to spit it in the toilet and discovered that her mouth had literally filled with blood (like taking a big gulp of water from a glass) she did not have any sensation of vomiting. It was all of a sudden with no other symptoms. The blood also had some clots in it. She has been having difficulty sleeping the last couple of weeks and has been trying some over the counter sleep medication. She also said that the last 2 days prior to this happening she had a headache. After the blood came up her headache went away. She did take her Blood pressure after the blood came up and it was around 100/50 She is also on high blood pressure medication. Any advice would be appreciated.

Rupture of tiny aneurysm and dry mucosa of the nose and throat..
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting the query
Sudden onset of bleeding could be due to various causes.
1. Rupture of the tiny aneurysms with the subtle raise in the blood pressure or stress.
2. Bleeding from the back side of the nose (Woodruf's plexus) without any reason, is common in elderly people.
3. Trauma due to presence of dentures in the oral cavity.
4. Rupture of congested blood vessel in the posterior pharyngeal wall.
If she has another episode of bleeding, it would be better to consult the doctor for a complete examination of the nose and throat. Meanwhile, she needs to drink plenty of warm water, to keep herself hydrated. Avoid coffee/tea/fizzy drinks.
For sleep disturbance she can continue with melatonin 3 mg or Songa night. The latter is available OTC.
Hope I have answered the query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Tea is an acidity inducer...
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing back
I'm sorry for being blunt. Tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, etc. are the inducers of gastritis and acid reflux. Acid reflux can cause congestion of the posterior pharyngeal wall and worsen the present condition. It's just a precautionary measure. There is absolutely no harm in taking one or two cups of tea in a day.
I wish her good health.
