What Causes Spitting Up Blood In Mucus While Treating Flu?

Question: I have been battling the Flu for 5 days with constant non-productive couphing. My doc prescribed me a couph syrup and this morning I started couphing up mucas. I thought this was great until I realized there is blood in the mucas. Is this normal, or a sign of something more serious?
Thanks
Thanks
Brief Answer:
Possibility of bronchitis is more.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You are having hemoptysis (blood in sputum).
It is commonly seen with bronchitis and lung infection.
Both of them are common after flu.
So better to get done chest x ray to rule out lung infection.
If chest x ray is normal then no need to worry for lung infection.
For Bronchitis, you need to tell me few more things.
1. Do you smoke?
2. Do you have breathlessness?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

well I am not short of breath and smoke here and there. but, I don't seem to be coughing blood anymore now...
Brief Answer:
No need to worry much.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.. No need to worry for bronchitis as you are not having breathlessness.
You might be having friction bleeding due to cough.
So take antihistamine and anti inflammatory drugs.
Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep your self hydrated.
Do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
And quit smoking as soon as possible. It is not good habit.
Hope I have solved your query. If you are not having further queries, then please close the conversation and rate my answer.
