What Causes Splenic Infarction?
Question: My 21 yr old daughter was diagnosed with a splenic infarction. Testing at the hospital did not reveal a cause. What would the next steps be?

I am sorry to hear that your daughter has had a splenic infarction. There are numerous causes of an infarction but most are due to increased clotting factors, vasculitis or unknown factors. At this point she needs to be fully worked up with studies including CT scans, blood work for infection, inflammation and clotting. If they find any abnormalities then she will need to be on anti-coagulation or anti-inflammatory medication. But like I said we frequently do not find a cause of the infarction. So she needs to be patient and have the doctors get the testing done.
