Brief Answer:
To rule out other causes too
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Being a Parent myself and having encountered many Parents being a Pediatric Surgeon, I understand your concern and apprehensions.
As per your suspicion , Gastro-oesophageal reflux could be the possibility .
But I would also consider other possibility
1. Non Specific Intestinal colic: Many children experience tummy upset very often especially if they do not consume high fiber diet and eat more of junk foods. No other significant pathology is found. Its basically diet related
2. Constipation: Consumption of junk foods, carbonated beverages, consuming less water could predispose to Constipation which either manifest as hard stools with straining while passing stools or decreased frequency of passing stools.
3. Worm Infestation: I am not sure if its common in your Geographical location.
Sore throat is quite common in a child of 6 years as ther is overgrowth of lymphoid tissue like
tonsil and adenoids which predispose to sore throat and
respiratory tract infection.
Acid reflux is more likely if the symptom of sore throat occurs especially during lying down position. Also if the sore throat is due to respiratory tract infection the symptoms persists for about a week and is also assocaited with other constitutional symptoms like
Fever,
Cough with expectoration, running nose etc.
I would need additional information to be able to conclude the cause
1. How often does she develop sore throat, what is the duration it last
2. Is there any constipation
3. Is there any bad oral smell: It occurs in acid reflux
4. Does she have running nose/fever/
Its quite common to see children with protruding belly also known as pot belly .
In the meantime I would suggest the following which will definitely provide the much needed relief
1. Small quantity frequent meals: Its a good habit to feed the child more frequently and small quantity meals. Giving large quantity especially along with lots of liquid will cause
gastric distension and induce reflux.
2. Avoid carbonated beverages
3. Avoid spicy and Oily food
4. Warm Saline Gargling: To a glass of Lukewarm water add 2 spoon of salt. Make her gargle the throat with it thrice a day.
5. Plenty of water: Follow rule of 1 which i normally advise my kids . ! glass of water 1 hour before food and 1 glass of water 1 hour after food. It will ensure adequate intake of water and will also avoid intake of water with meals which will induce reflux.
6. High fiber diet: 2 servings of vegetable salad a day
7. Avoid putting your daughter to bed immediately after eating.
Do get back to me
Take Care
