What Causes Stones In Urine When Suffering From UTI?

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: I had a suspected Urinary Tract infection two weeks ago and was put on 7 days of Cipro 500mg 2x a day, my urine cleared. and my doctor did blood work while on cipro to check kidney function all numbers where normal expect my WBC where 11.6 and my Platelets were 411, Nuerophils and Lymphs only slightly elevated. So my question is why would I pass something in my urine this morning that looks like grains of sand, I took them out of the toilet felt on and it crumbles like sand and feels like sand, it was tiny maybe the 1/4 the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. I had some minor lower back pain that was helped with motrin. SO what are the sand like particles a stone or something else. My Dr. is on vacation this week so could not ask him.

Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you had pain in loin associated with UTI and stones in the kidney.

Normally whenever there are stones in the kidney it is always associated with infection which is reflected in blood tests as raised WBC count .

Please continue taking antibiotics for one more week and repeat your routine urine test , urine culture and ultrasound scanning done after 2 weeks .
done .

I attached a picture of what came out in my urine flow this morning for you to view, its like sand and has grayish/white cast to it but came out in two tiny clumps that broke apart and are just like sand. I finished one week of antibiotics over a week ago are you saying I need another week. My doctor is out of town I would have to visit a clinic for more antibiotics. Please look at the picture I know the resolution is bad but like I said I don't know what stones look like does this look like a stone(s)?????

Looks like small stones or infected debris.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up.
They look like a stones particles and nothing to be worried about .

Get your urine culture done to confirm that the infection is fully controlled

Ensure to drink more water it will help to pass any more stone particles left in the kidneys.

Thanks and Regards.

So kidney stones can look like sand and can be grayish white I know I asked this before but just want to confirm, the smaller particles you see broke away from the larger one in picture and feel exactly like sand when they dried. I just want to make sure I am understanding you correctly. Thank you

One last question than I think I am done for now. After the stone(s) passed I had a small spot of blood on the toilet paper is this normal?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. P. T. Patil (7 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yes it is normal HelloThanks for writing again .

Detailed Answer:
It is normal to have a drop of blood after passing stone .It is due to rubbing of the urethral mucosa (injury) by the small spikes of stone while passing through.

If you have time post your review on this forum.

Thanks and Regards.
