What Causes Strange Sensations In Face And Scalp?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Aug 2015
Question: I've been having a strange sensation on my face, and my scalp. The best way to describe would be goose-bumps-like feeling and tingling. It is on my face (lower cheeks towards jaw) and on my scalp. It is not painful but feels strange. It comes and goes.
I have had pain in my neck and I went for a massage and to my chiropractor. My neck is feeling much better.
Should I be concerned?
thanks.

Brief Answer:
central neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

This may be due to neuropathy.

This refers to abnormal structure or function of the nerves. It can be central (related to nerves coming from the brain and spinal cord) or peripheral.

Since the sensation is on your face it is likely central neuropathy.

In some cases the symptoms go away on their own so you can consider monitoring it if it is not too disturbing.

Some of the possible causes are: (1) trauma or compression of the nerves

(2)diabetes

(3)vitamin b12 or folate deficiency

(4)liver or kidney disease

(5)side effect of medication

(6)infections eg shingles

(7)exposure to toxins

(8)neurological diseases such as stroke or ms

(9)idiopathic- cause not found

IF the symptoms are not disturbing then you can monitor.

If the sensation is very disturbing then it would be best to see your doctor for assessment.

This would mean physical examination (central nerve examination- involves assessing sensation, movement of facial muscles, vision, hearing).

Bloods may also be needed- vitamin b12 and folate, diabetes screening, liver and kidney function

There are medications that can be used to help with these abnormal sensations.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you!
I forgot to tell you that I am on Cipralex (10mg) for my anxiety and panic attacks. Could this be a side effect of Cipralex?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
not likely

Detailed Answer:
HI

Not likely, even though they are originally intended for anxiety disorders or depression, these medications have also been studied for the treatment of nerve related pain/abnormal sensations.

Cipralex is one of the meds that has been researched as treatment for neuropathy.

Many antidepressants/anti anxiety or anti seizure medications are used for this purpose.
