default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I have had stringy mucous (white in color) in and by my softer and now harder stools with some BM frequency. I have tested clear of parasites and a clear colonoscopy. What could this be and how should I treat this? It includes some fatigue!

Brief Answer:
it may be associated with infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.
After reading your post, it seems that you might be having infection of the gastrointestinal tract. I would advise that you can take an antibiotic like Ciprofloxacin 500mg twice daily along with Metronidazole 400 mg thrice daily. An antacid like Omeprazole 40mg once a day before meals along with a probiotic will have added benefits.
Eat light meals prepared under hygienic conditions. Also take care of your hydration.
If the symptoms persists, get yourself clinically examined and investigated. A stool test can be repeated.
I hope this is helpful to you. If you have any further query, I will be happy to help.
Regards. Thanks.

Thanks....I have already had two stool tests for bacteria and parasites that came out clear. Last time I took antibiotics for my gut, I got c diff bacteria positive! Could it be colitis? I have no fever. How does one diagnose an intestinal infection of sorts?

Brief Answer:
colitis can cause similar symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for providing more information.
Colitis can cause similar symptoms as you are experiencing. Colitis or inflammation of the intestines (colon) is commonly associated with infection of the intestines. It usually persists for few days even when infection is getting treated.
So I would advise that you should continue with the medicines prescribed in my earlier post. You can add anti inflammatory like Mefenamic acid tablet for better relief.
A stool examination along with a Complete Blood Count ( CBC ) in addition to a clinical examination is helpful for detecting intestinal infection.
I hope this answers your query. If you have any further doubts, please mention.
Regards. Thanks.

I don't have a fever so doesnt that mean that I am infection free? Just wondering. Can I take an over the counter med like tylenol to clear any issues in my GI tract?

Brief Answer:
You can take tylenol.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Fever may not show in slight infections. Since you have already taken antibiotics, you might not be having significant infection.
You can take Tylenol or any anti inflammatory for treating the inflammation.
I hope this answers your query.
Regards. Thanks.
