What Causes Strong Taste Of Bile After Gall Bladder Removal?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Sep 2015
Question: On July 27th I have emergency surgery to remove my gall bladder. Since then I get a very strong taste of bile that lasts all day. My surgeon is on vacation until the 1st. Is this something common or do I need to look into what foods I am eating. I have removed fried foods and am working on reducing all fats.

Brief Answer:
This is a normal thing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This is a very normal thing. Gallbladder cumulates the bile. It is secreted constantly from the liver to gallbladder. Once you eat something, gallbladder contraction moves whole this bile to the duodenum and it is mixed with eaten food.
Now when we removed the gallbladder, bile constantly flows to duodenum, no matter if you eat something or not. This is a new situation for your digestive tract and it must take some time (3 months usually) for the bile ducts to get used to it.
During that time you may have bile taste as well as diarrhea.
You can lessen this symptom by avoiding fatty, spicy and fried foods. Try to eat more often small portions.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
