What Causes Sudden Onset Of Vertigo And Pins And Needles In The Hand?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: I have had a sudden onset of vertigo today and this afternoon also some pins and needles in my right hand. In January this year I experienced a number of intense dejavu episodes followed by nausea. An MRI, CT and EEG have shown nothing. My neurologist is seeing me in a couple of weeks but wondered if there is any link between the dejavu and vertigo (the vertigo has been going for a couple of hours now). It is probably viral middle ear infection but just curious. I have not had any dejavu now for a month and a half. I have had alot of stress and anxiety at work. Yesterday I told my husband who I am separated from that I want a divorce (lots of stress atm)

Brief Answer:
Cervical spondylosis, XXXXXXX stroke due to severe stress

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Your symptoms would lead me to primarily rule out a XXXXXXX stroke secondary to accelerated hypertension (due to the extreme stress you are going through)

After eliciting a thorough medical, family and personal history and clinically examining you, I would:
-get an MRI of your brain and cervical spine along with an MRA/MRV(imaging the arteries and veins in your brain) to rule circulatory compromise

Middle ear infection can cause vertigo but does not cause tingling in the arm.

Do you have any other medical conditions or take any medications? (hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, Thyroid problems, for instance)?
XXXXXXX vu experiences are common in normal individuals without any problems but when too frequent or prolonged may be associated with temporal lobe lesions or epilepsy.
Since your tests were negative, this is unlikely.
XXXXXXX vu & vertigo can be caused by a common problem like a tumor in the brain but since you don't have XXXXXXX vu experiences anymore and vertigo is a new symptom, I don't think they are related.

Cervical spondylosis can also result in similar symptoms and be ruled out be an x-ray of the cervical spine

I recommend that you see a physician asap to check your blood pressure, cardiovascular function and look for neurological deficits/signs of raised intracranial pressure. These in addition to an x-ray of the cervical spine will help pinpoint cause.

I understand that you don't need the added stress of suffering from a stroke and hospital stay but I'd rather that you have this checked out. Caught early enough a stroke can be completely stopped and curable.
Hope this helps.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
