What Causes Sudden Pain In Abdomen?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: My 16 year old son had a sudden attack of severe abdominal pain and mid back pain. We went to the local ER and a CT revealed he has a left extrarenal kidney and his mono% in his CBC was slightly elevated. The range was 0-10 and his was 11.6 We were not told anything about this in th ER or to follow up. Of course I've googled this already, but should I be concerned? What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
Extra renal pelvis is congenital bulging of the kidney collecting system

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The kidney has a cortex where the urine is generated. Once the urine is formed then it enters the collecting system which is made of calyces and the pelvis of kidney. This is a cone like structure and from here the urine passes in to a long narrow tube, the ureter which connects the kidney to the urinary bladder. In many people the collecting system is more bulged out than usual. Usually the collecting system is bulged when there is a stone in the ureter or due to some obstruction to the passage of urine. After doing CT scan for your son, it is confirmed that the bulging renal pelvis is from a congenital cause and not a disease. Therefore there is no need to worry about the extra renal pelvis in your son.

2. Monocytosis is the increase in number of a group of white blood cells called monocytes. Borderline monocytosis is usually of no significance. However monocytosis which is significant might indicate blood disorders, infections, inflammatory causes and a diagnosis is reached only after clinical examination.

3. As the medicine MD has examined your child and found no serious issues and the rest of CBC is normal, therefore I conclude that the monocytosis is not a problem.

Hope your query is answered.
