What Causes Sudden Weakness Of The Legs And Shortness Of Breath In An Elderly Person?

Question: Hi, i am 72 could be in better shape but of late I am having spells of weakness in my legs, even when earlier in the day I am fine. Occasional shortness of breath, quite a bit of swelling in my ankles. Can this be something serious or can I attribute it to "old age" even when I don't feel anywhere near 72?
