What Causes Swelling And White Coating On Tongue?
Question: Hello Dr. Rynne. I'm wondering what I can do about this condition: My tongue has been swollen for several days and I have a slightly bitter taste. There's also a white coating on my tongue but after looking at pictures online of thrush, I don't think this is what I have. (The coating I have is smoother and covers the middle of the tongue.) I haven't been taking any new medications. Thank you for taking the time to consider my question. XXXX

I don't really have any family history of this condition. However I do remember when my 92 year old mother was in the hospital with serious medical issues (none of which I have) a nurse told me she had thrush.
I haven't had any lab tests regarding this.
I believe I only brushed my tongue with baking soda once since this has occurred. I normally brush my teeth and tongue with baking soda once per week.
I'm sorry, I do not know how to attach a picture (actually upload to my computer) of my tongue. If this is helpful, the white coating on my tongue is very thin.

I just remembered you asked me for a list of medications. They are:
Allegra - 180 mg - 1 per day
Singulair - 10 mg - 1 per day
Flonase - 2 sprays each nostril per day
Lexipro - 2 10 mg tablets per day
OTC: Mucinex - 600 mg twice per day
Vitamins, nutritional supplements
I haven't added anything new to my regimen.

Regarding the white coating on my tongue: Although it is very thin as I said, it is a bit heavier than it would be on a normal day.
