What Causes Swelling In Painful Foot Post Injury?

Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hello, I fell down a few stairs a week ago. One of my minor injuries was what I though, taking a couple layers of skin of the top of my left foot. It appeared at first that the skin was just removed and was bright pink. I put peroxide on it and a band aid. Yesterday when I got out of bed it was very sore. It now appears there is a dark blood or purple core and around it looks like blood under the skin? It is very sore and a little swollen. I iced it yesterday and it seemed to make it worst. Can you advise? Thank you XXXXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for posting your query.

After going through your question, I feel it is just the normal healing process. However, to be sure, you should get it looked at by a doctor.

Swelling, pain and changes in color are a part of normal healing process.. for the time being you can clean the wound with iodine solution mixed with hydrogen peroxide, after cleaning, just let it dry and you can keep the wound open as well. Make sure not to let water fall on the wound.

Please do take a photograph with good focus and ample lighting and upload it with this query so that I can guide you further.

I hope this answers your query, please do write back with a photograph.

Awaiting your response,

Kind regards

Dr. I have no way of sending a picture. I dont believe the web site has that option? Can you confirm it should not be wrapped or elavated? How long will it take to heal? It is about the size of a half dollar. Is the dark spot just dried blood under the surface of my skin? Please advise. Thank you again. XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Will take about 5-6 days to heal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXXXXXX

Thank you for writing back to me.

1. The website has the option to upload the picture, on your dashboard (when you open your query) there is an option called "attach reports", you can attach pictures taken from your cell phone/camera.

2. Elevation/being wrapped or covered in scab is a normal healing process.

3. It will take about a week to heal.

4. Dark spot is most likely the dried blood (scab).

Hope that answers your query.

Kind regards.
