What Causes Swelling In The Legs And Penis After Bypass Surgery?

default
Posted on Thu, 10 Nov 2016
Question: I am a61 years old white male out of an open heart bypass (1). Everything went fine and it was done 18 days ago. I am home, heart is medicated well and my lungs are working shallow, but sufficiently to allow me to walk independently a block around my house.
Unfortunately in the past three days I developed edema in my legs and my penis is completely filled with water. I can pee, though and there is no pain associated to the urinary functions.
I also take Lasix (20 mg x diem) but I have been unable to get rid of the edema. I try to drink little water not to fill my body with additional water, as my doctor recommended.
I am worried because it is night and things are getting worse and I would like to know if I should go to the ER of the near hospital or if there is no problem in waiting till tomorrow when I hopefully see my doctor.
Thank you in advace for your suggestion.

Brief Answer:
Yes, to identify the cause and treat accordingly as explained

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thank for your query and an elucidate history.
Noted all the history you have so well put in.
My thoughts:
Better to visit ER or nearby hospital, the reasons being:
- edema of the legs and penis, developed 3 days ago, post-op 18 days of heart bypass, not responding to less water intake and lasix 20, lungs working shallow.
The cause has to be found out.
Clinical evaluation and Physical examination is also very important.
As also investigations related to the problem like:
- Cardiac evaluation
- Local evaluation.
- Kidney functions.
- To see for anemia and hypoproteinemia.
- Respiratory system, X-ray of the chest.
- Any other probable cause.

Identifying the cause, the exact diagnosis makes it easy for the targeted treatment.
I hope, this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communications.
