Could Being Overweight Be The Reason Behind Swelling In Foot, Ankle And Shin Area?
I was struck in the right shin by an iron bar two years ago. Since then I have had swelling in my right foot, ankle and shin area. I have been to the doctors twice about it but they just gave me antibiotics which has done nothing. Now I am also noticing swelling in the left foot, ankle and shin area. I am nearly 50, male and overweight. I do exercise by riding a bicycle 5kms a day 5 times a week and I also do weights for 20 minutes a day 5 times a week. However, I have only been doing this for the past couple months. In general my health seems ok.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Lohit K's Response
Hi, This bilateral pedal edema may be due to any of the systemic reasons. May be due to any of the following reasons : hypoproteinemia, anaemia, hypertension, Renal problem, Liver problem or cardiac problem. Since you don't have any symptoms suggestive of the above said reasons I advice you to get general physical examination by your doctor once. For now you need to do elevation of food during sleeping and also while taking rest. Get examined for varicose veins and blood sugar levels once. Get back with the results of above mentioned for further discussion.
Hope this helps you.
Regards
