Question: I'm 16 days post op for umbilical hernia repair (open surgery corrected with mesh) I have a marbel sized lump directly above my belly button and swelling, is that normal?
Brief Answer:
Possibly a review by your surgeon required.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.
This swelling could be a collection of blood (hematoma) in the surrounding tissue which if not infected might get resolved of its own. This could also be the over folding of the mesh on itself at one end. In both the cases it might just get resolved with time and you have to have patience.
However, in case the swelling increases in size and there is any pain associated with it, if I were your surgeon, I would recall you for a review to exclude continuing formation of a hematoma/seroma and any chance of a recurrence of a hernia which is not very frequent after a mesh repair of the hernia.
I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
