What Causes Swollen Foot And Legs?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: Dear Sir/Mam,

My father, 64 years old, has his both legs' palm (starting from the toe) swollen since past 4-5 months. His uric acid level was normal around the time the problem had surfaced, but in the past week on test we found his uric acid has shot up to 10, it came down to 2.5 upon the following medications -
Feburic 80 - 1 Tabs since last week & continuing
Ziloric 300 - 1 Tabs since last week

Our family physician was suspecting the swollen legs could be due to high uric acid, but although the uric acid levels are normal his legs are still swollen. Kindly do advice what could be the cause and the next course of actions towards proper diagnosis. Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,

Brief Answer:
There are other causes of swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting your query.

It is very unlikely for high uric acid to cause swelling of whole foot or leg . It causes swelling of 1-2 small joints of foot or hands. So there is another cause which is responsible for the swelling which needs to be evaluated.

Problems in liver , heart , kidney or low protein levels can cause swelling. I advise you to get the following tests done and revert back .

Serum Albumin, TSH, Serum Creatinine, Liver function test .

Any clarifications feel free to ask.
Happy to answer.
