Question: I sprained my ankle yesterday I went and had a X-ray and the dr said that as far as he could see there wasn't any thing broke. The swelling has continued to get worse. The top of my foot is even swollen. I now have some tingling in my toes and heel..

Brief Answer:
There is likely soft tissue and ligament injury causing your ankle swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. I report injury x rays regularly and you can upload your x ray of ankle should like me to have a second look at it.

2. In most probability there is no fracture but soft tissue and ligament injury might have occurred.

3. After an injury, the ligaments and muscles might get injured. This inflammation is maximum after a day and that is the reason you are having more swelling now than when you had the injury. The swelling is from edema and release of inflammatory substances from the injured area and it might persist for 3 to 5 days.

4. Any ankle sprain requires to be initially treated with rest, foot elevation, ice pack for 15 minutes every few hours and compression bandage over the ankle. Please ask help from your nurse to assist your with compression wrap bandage.

5. You can take over the counter pain relief medicine if there is significant pain in your ankle. If the pain is progressively worsening even after above measures then please consult your doctor again. Complete healing might take 6 weeks.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please keep a watch over your foot and take medical assistance if required

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. There is swelling of your foot and this is probably from the edema in soft tissues. Hope the pain is not much. You surely require to give rest to your affect ankle and foot. You can walk slowly at home but please avoid running and weight bearing.

2. You can apply anti inflammatory and muscle relaxant ointment or spray over the hurting area. Apply a compression wrap with the help of your nurse and it should not be too tight. If you feel numbness and tingling in toes or if toes are becoming blue after applying compression wrap then it is too tight and the blood circulation is getting affected and must be removed and applied correctly.

3. We need to watch the swelling and it should decrease over the coming 3 to 5 days. At any time if you feel there is sudden increase in pain then please do not hesitate to call your doctor.

Hope your query is answered.
