What Causes Swollen Lumpy Veins On Back Of Calves?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Dec 2014
Question: Hi. I think I am developing varicose veins on the backs of my calves. Looking a little bit swollen and lumpy. All my veins are quite swollen looking but this might be due to hotter weather in Australia or excess fluid. Please could you tell me something about what causes varicose veins and what one can do to alleviate them. I do weight bearing exercises, squats, climb stairs, to strengthen bones. Am I doing the wrong thing for my veins? What about diet? Is this an acid condition? Thanks. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Its a common condition and can be treated easily

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Varicose veins are a common condition specially in women. They are not related to diet. Its chances increase during the pregnancy period. Increase weight bearing can lead to its aggravation. They usually do not lead to problems but in some cases can lead to bleeding or ulcers in the leg.

I suggest you see a Doctor or your GP and get a Colour Doppler done for your lower limb veins which will clarify whether you have varicose veins and whether anything needs to be done about them.
You should have lots of fluids and can start wearing Class II Compression stockings to keep the Varicosities in check and take advice of your Doctor once he or she examines you.
And yes, its not related to acid problems.

Do let me know if there are any further queries I can help you with and do share the Doppler report if you get it done.

Take care.
Dr Rishi.

OK, thanks. You said weight bearing exercise can aggravate. What sort of exercise should I do, more cardio? I don't like it much but maybe its what I need?

I'm not pregnant or overweight.

I like to drink plenty of fluid, but my sodium levels are low and blood and urine osmolality is low and doctors tell me to drink less fluids. Should I have more salt?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Do more cardio exercises

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Good to hear from you.
You should do more Cardio that would be good.
Adding salt will cause more fluid to be retained in your body so I would not advice that. You continue with the fluid intake that you are regular with.
If you do not wish to do aanything about the varicose veins presently then just wear Compression stockings and carry on as they wont trouble you much.
Take care,
