What Causes Tender Breasts After Stopping Contraceptive Pills?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jun 2014
Question: I have been off contraceptive pill for 2 months now after 20 yrs, and been taking folic acid 5mg. Had tender breasts for the past 2 period cycles and have my period currently (day 4). Noticed that I have a hardened cyst like lump that has formed beside my left nipple and is very tender. I also think I knocked my nipple on the weekend, and also in my sleep. What could this be caused from?

Brief Answer:
mild trauma to the breast

Detailed Answer:
Dear member,
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.

As you were on ocpill for quite some time you were not ovulating.
Now that you are off it you are ovulating.
ovulating cycles cause breast tenderness which reduces at onset of period.
persistent tenderness with a lump can be due to blunt trauma which may have occured as you mentioned.
Sometimes lumpy breasts and tenderness can be due to fibroadenosis but in such a case it occurs in each and every cycle.
As this has happened recently it can be due to mild trauma.
I would recommend that you use cold compress and wait for a few days.
If still not resolved then a ultrasound should be done.
Please write back if you have any queries.
Thanks
