Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I have been taking Prednisone for some time due to COPD. I have developed a very sore tendon in my left
leg. I have read that this may be a side effect of prednisone. Should I be concerned.

Brief Answer:
Not a side effect of steroids, but you need to check and take treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for using HCM,

Steroid use can surely cause many side effects. When a doctor recommends starting on a specific treatment, he always tries to see the benefits and the risks of using that medicine and then if the benefit is bigger he/she prescribes it.

I'm sure your doctor must have thought about this when he suggested that you needed this medicine.
The symptom you are describing is not a typical side effect of long or short term steroid use. Weakness and wasting of the proximal limb muscles, myopathy, osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures, and aseptic necrosis of bone are the most common musculoskeletal side effects instead.

The sore tendon you have may be from all the other causes that every person may have. I would recommend to check it to a local specialist if it is not getting better or if is getting worse.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need more clarification.

Take care,
Dr. Papaqako.
