What Causes Testosterone Level Of 447 In An Elderly Woman?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: I am a healthy 65 year old woman. i just had a full panel of blood work done, including a hormone panel. My tester one level came back at 447. The normal range is 0 to 41. What could cause such a fantastic number? I do not have the symptoms that would go with this elevated tester one level. No acne, facial hair, increased perspiration, or enlarged clitoris. Could this be an indicator of something very wrong?

Brief Answer:
I have listed all the possible causes for you ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I completely understand your anxiety and would like to take this chance to explain to you why and how your testosterone levels have returned such a high value.

In my opinion there can be only 3 causes for the extremely high testosterone levels seen in your case ma'am, taking into consideration your age as well, they are:

1. Factors that can cause hormonal imbalances (including menopause which you must be experiencing right now)

2. Polycystic ovarian syndrome: This condition is seen along with all other symptoms mentioned by you in your query (which you do not have) and all you need to rule out/confirm this condition is an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis (with special emphasis on the ovaries)

3. Tumors or cancer of the ovaries or breast: To rule out/confirm this we need to conduct a mammogram for the breasts, a pap smear (or colposcopy and punch biopsy) for cervical cancer, and an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to look into the ovaries

I understand how some of the possibilities can be alarming, but I have listed them as it is my duty to keep you informed (well-informed), and if at all possibilities 2 and 3 are ruled out elaborately enough, then we can clearly blame your high testosterone levels to be due to menopause.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
