What Causes Tingling And Burning Sensation On Left Foot And Leg?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Mar 2016
Question: Hello,
I'm a 55 Y.O. AA male with no previous known medical issues and never had to take medication for anything. Late in December 2015, I noticed a slight tingling sensation in the sole of my left foot. Gradually the tingling has turned into a burning sensation, I googled the symptoms and they lead me to think that maybe I was diabetic so I purchased a Contour Next blood glucose tester and tested myself off & on for over a two week period. I've performed multiple test (fasting and not fasting) and the highest reading has been a 92 mg/dl. The burning sensation has started to travel up my left leg, at this point it's not very painful but I'm afraid that it's going to get worse. My google search indicated everything from diabetes to AID's and Multiple Sclerosis, I'm about 99.9% I don't have AID's but what really scares me is the MS possibility. I want to see a doctor but don't know what type of doctor that I need to see, please advise on all points. Thank You!

Brief answer.....consult a neurologist for detailed investigations
Detailed answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Your symptoms suggest that you are suffering from peripheral neuropathy.
In this nerve endings get damaged and then they misfire resulting in sensation of burning or pain in feet even when there is no wound in feet.
Although diabetes is the most common cause for such burning feet, there are various other reasons also which can cause it like.....
Alcoholism
Lack of VIT B 12
Hypothyroidism
Peripheral artery disease
Chronic kidney problems
HIV/ AIDS
Small Fiber neuropathy
Amyloidosis ......etc.
There is a long list of medical causes which can result in neuropathy.
You need to consult a neurologist for examination and detailed investigations like ...
Various blood investigations, nerve conduction studies, electromyography etc.
Proper treatment can be instituted once the basic cause for your symptoms is found out.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
