What Causes Tiredness After Physical Activity And Increased Dizziness While Waking Up?

Posted on Wed, 12 Aug 2015
Question: Hey doctor. I went on a golf trip during the weekend that was pretty tiring. It ended Saturday night. Now on Monday and Tuesday morning I woke up experiencing dizziness. I have also felt slight dizziness during the day too but mainly just when I wake up. Should I be alarmed it might be diabetes. I am a little overweight and never had this feeling for longer than a few minutes.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
Good evening. Thanks for writing to HCM. I am Dr Praveen and I will be answering your query today. Noted the contents of your question.

Dizziness is an unusual symptom of diabetes. After a prolonged golf trip its likely you have some amount of dyselectrolytemia (your sodium, potassium, magnesium levels in the body along with body water changes). It can cause dizziness. I would suggest your measure your blood pressure both in the lying position and in the standing position to see if there is a significant fall. You could meanwhile have plenty of fresh fruit juices with added salt if your BP is in the normal of low normal range.

By the way are you experiencing any sort of gastric reflux or bloating sensation in the tummy? Do you have a neck pain? Do you have a ringing sensation in the ear with fullness? If you have any of these we need to think of other causes.

Putting this apart, if you are overweight with a family history of diabetes I would suggest you to check your blood glucose levels in the fasting state and after a full meal in the morning. This is unrelated to the symptom you mentioned but one that needs to be checked for especially in the united states where a large percentage of population dont know they have diabetes.

I will be glad to answer any more queries if you have any. Take care.
Warm regards
Dr Praveen

I did have a sore throat and some acid reflux initially but that went away. No ringing in the ears but some popping. I was dizzy against this morning and it really affects me the most when i wake up and when i lay down.

Im going to get blood work done tomorrow. I just want to make sure i dont get pre-diabetes. I will be cutting out alcohol and red meat for awhile to lose weight. Are there other food really good for diabetes prevention.

Brief Answer:
Ear - can be a cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
I understand. Well, with the poppign in the ear and your positional symptoms it could be a problem of the ear. The inner ear maintains balance as well. Labrynthitis/BPPV could be other differentials in your case. Just get yourself well hydrated & check your BP as planned and if your symptoms don't resolve you should see an ENT specialist.

Its good that you decided to cut down red meat and alcohol. Both will definitely help in giving you better health.

There are no particular food stuffs mentioned that can prevent diabetes. You need to eat to your requirement only. Eating fresh wholesome food is good. Cut down refined flour. Take low fat dairy and fish. Exercise regularly. Cut down alcohol. Loose 7% of your body weight. Cinnamon is a natural product that improves the function of insulin.

Warm regards.
Dr Praveen
