What Causes Upper Abdominal Pain Despite Having Normal CT Scan?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: Hello,
I hope this is the right place to ask this. A little over 2 months ago I became VERY aware of my left abdomen. I have, in the past had minor issues with colo-rectal health and have such had 3 colonoscopies, the last in 2013 at which I was diagnosed with Diverticulosis (pre-cursor to diverticulitis). At any rate the GI I visited suggested an abdominal CT which came back as normal to mainly check for divers-disease.

Since that time however, I have experienced minor dull aching in the upper left portion of my abdomen with no other symptoms. As we all know Google is the enemy here and now I fear terrible things. My question is, would general abdominal CT scan such as that I had reveal issues with other organs such as the pancreas and stomach? Would I be somewhat foolish to assume that if I indeed had tumor growth that would cause physical pain at this point it would have shown up in this CT?

Any advice would be great. I am indeed having the images reviewed by a second set of eyes.

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Consider Second Opinion on the issues!!

HI,Dear !! Thanks for the query to HCM.
Read and reviewed your query in context to left side of abdomen.
In the given scenario,It seems to be a Googled confusion more, than the health issues, which is really a big trouble with you.
In the given scenario following are My replies to your queries-
Q-1-My question is,would general abdominal CT scans such as that I had reveal issues with other organs such as the pancreas and stomach?
Ans-1-Dear CT abdomen would give details for all the organs in abdomen like pancreas and stomach.

Q-2- Would I be somewhat foolish to assume that if I indeed had tumour growth that would cause physical pain at this point it would have shown up in this CT?
Ans-Dear,Dont think like the way you presume.Mostly the tumour growth would grow silently initially and does not cause physical pains, and would show up in the CT abdomen done by You.
With such a suspicion, Your doctor would advise for CT abdomen with Contrast study for Colonic growth.
But this is not the case in you, just follow Your doctor's advise

My Opinion-
In the given scenario-You seem to suffer-from IBS with bad colo-rectal health, from your disturbing food habits and job work style,as the colonoscopic findings of-deverticulosis-are not confirmed by CT abdomen studies.
And other organ seem to be normal, otherwise the defects -like growth in those organs could have been reported in that CT abdomen report.

Do's Suggested -
you can have second opinion from Surgeon and get evaluation after P/R(per rectum ) examination and after proctoscopic examinations.
Change food habit-to Bland and BRAT(Banana, rice, smashed apple, toast)diet with no spices x 6 weeks.
Avoid nonveg, fried diet, with alcohol, smoking, tobacco etc.
Take PPI-like Pantoprazole-with domperidoen-to control-Stomach acid reflux
Add Youghurt helpings 2 times per day
Get treatment of Entero-Colitis with antibiotic+antiprotozoal(like-Ciplox-Oz)
Take Cap Sporlac 1-x 2 per day x 2 weeks,to stabilize colon bacterial flora.
Take Antispasmodics-Like Dicyclomine
Add Vit B12 /Folic acid-for fast recoupin of colonic mucosa.
I would suggest you,
to Get Stool -test done and check recurring food induced infections
and Avoid street fast food / hotel foods/for 3 mths time.

Hope this changed life and food style would go a long way to keep away from
the disturbed and painful left bowel.

Next appointment-
For any emergency or for Follow up after 6 weeks after your doctors visit, for further review of your health concerns,if need be.
