What Causes Urge To Urinate And Irritation In Urethra?
Question: Dear Doctor, I have permanent urge to urinate since a cpl of hours due to an irritation at the exit of my urethra. Urinating becomes then painful at the same spot and I also see some light blood on the toilet paper at cleaning afterwards. The bleeding seems to start during urination and I cannot see any blood in my urine in the toilet. However, what makes me worry is that I cannot see any wound at the exterior when checking either. This all started after sexual intercourse with my partner. Can it be a bladder infection that would require taking antibiotics or does it seem like some smaller external irritation that will pass? Many thanks for answering
Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome
Detailed Answer:
hi and welcome to hcm. it seems to be just minor irritation of inner urethral wall or there was urinary stone that passed and cause minor injury of urethra. infection is third possible cause. in every case, there is no need to be worried. I suggest to wait few more days, drink plenttof fluids, raspberry tea. if pain or bleeding persist for 2-3 days you should do urine analysis, urinoculture and kidneys ultrasound wish you good health. regards

Hello, many thanks for your reply. The bleeding has largely stopped but the pain not entirely and I feel a more general malaise and also have 37.3 temperature now. Still no antibiotics? I would have a pack of Monuril at hand in case. Thanks in advance
Brief Answer:
Rather wait for a day or two
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
I suggest to wait for 24-48 hours and see willl symptoms improve. It is better to avoid antibiotics as much as possible since overusage of it may cause resistancy and affect bowel flora. If there is no improvement in 2 days, you can take Monuril. Rather Nitrofurantoin would be better option. But take urine culture before antibiotics.
