What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: Two nights in a row, I woke with my pj's wet. I have had night sweats before, but these two times, I
smelled urine- no mistake about that. I wore a pad the second night, thinking I had an accident the first night.. That was not the case. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
urinary incontinence

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have been through your question and understand your concern.

It seems you are experiencing urinary incontinence. You should know that this is not an uncommon situation and generally the underlying cause is benign.

The most common cause and the first one to rule out is urinary tract infection. You should have a urine test to see if there is an infection and treat ot properly.

A second cause would be the uterine prolapsr which needs a gynecological consult.

The other causes are less probable, including vaginitis or a neurological problem.

Hope this helps.

My pad was not wet, that's my point. My pj's were wet like night sweats, and it smelled like urine.

Brief Answer:
Ammonia in your sweat

Detailed Answer:
Hello again. Sorry for keeping you waiting for the follow up.

If you are sure your pads were not wet, then we are in front of ammonia in your sweat. It is not related to urinary problems.

Ammonia is a metabolic product of break down of your daily intake proteins. Generally it is quickly converted into urea which is excreted in urine giving its characteristic smell. When large amount of ammonia from protein break down is produced some of it gets out through sweat, giving that characteristic smell.

Generally this is caused when one takes large amounts of proteins and little carbohydrates, with the latter being the main source of energy. When this lacks, then the body uses proteins.

So I recommend changing your diet if yours is based on large amounts of proteins and meanwhile try drinking more water, as water will dilute ammonia and it will make it easier to excrete.

If the situation persists and you or others around you notice that smell in your mouth, you should see your GP because it might be related to kidneys.

Hope this time this information helps, please feel free for further questions.
