Brief Answer:
The most common cause is a shift in vag bacteria.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Bacterial vaginosis is a shift in the normal vaginal flora towards the ones that cause discharge and odor. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is easily treated with a mild antibiotic pill or cream or ovule. The antibiotic is usually Flagyl or Cleocin-based. It usually requires a prescription of came from the gynecologist. Sometimes more than one course of treatment is necessary to reestablish the normal flora. Occasionally yeast affections can occur from the antibiotic treatment and it is not a bad idea to take something to prevent that occurring if you are someone who is susceptible to yeast infections.

I suggested the time of testing for bacterial vaginosis you also have sexually transmitted disease testing for trichamonis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, the three most common sexually-transmitted diseases so city with discharge and odor if there's any possibility that you have been exposed.

I hope you feel better soon.
