What Causes Vaginal Itching?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, lately I have been experiencing an uncomfortable itch in my vagina. To be more specific it is on and around the clitoris. A few days after I scratched I noticed 3 small bumps around my clitoris, one on each side and one above it. They don't hurt unless touched, rubbed or pressure is applied to them. They are sensitive to touch. I am married and have had only one sexual partner. I did not have sex until I was married which was a little over two years now. I am currently transitioning to a new doctor and am aware I need to be seen by a doctor the only problem is my new doctor is not able to see me until next month. In the meantime if possible I would like some guidance or at least some more information to somewhat settle my nerves while I wait for my appointment. I have been driving myself up the wall reading all sorts of articles online. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
most likely it is due to infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM,

I understand the issue well.

The itching suggests an infection. Multiple sexual partners is not the only risk factor for vaginal infections. Trauma due to sex may also inititate an infection.

The bumps may have come from scratching and so have lead to an infection. Other reasons may be viral infections like herpes of simple folliculitis [ infections of the hair follicles]. The commonest infection leading to itching is fungal infection and infection due to an organism called trichomonas.

So as of now, you may use vaginal tablets like candid [ containing clotrimazole] and candibiotic powder on the vulva. Also, use medicated wipes to clean the vulva twice daily, change the undergarmets twice daily and wash them with hot water and dry them in sun as it kills fungi. Also try to avoid sex until the symptoms decrease.

If it is a yeast infection then you will get relief with this regimen. If the symptoms persist then you will need to get an evaluation for infection and get treated accordingly.
Please do not worry, these are very common issues during an active sexual life and can be treated easliy.

Hope this satisfies your query.
