What Causes Vaginal Spotting?

Question: I've been on an estrgen and a progesterone since Feb. I have had ultra sounds when I was spotting. And found only some thinning. I just had some light brownish spotting ? Do I need a harmone change or is this normal? XXXXX YYYY@YYYY
