Question: I have been experiencing vertigo along with diarrhea and nausea, mid and lower back pain along with my usual fatigue, which the fatigue is due to MS. But the new symptoms came about around 3 weeks ago, when I moved to my new home in East Tennessee.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. MS is a demyelinating disease and therefore affects any system where the nervous connections are not functioning properly as a result of the demyelination. Treatment of MS has 2 aspects: immunomodulatory therapy (IMT) for the underlying immune disorder and therapies to relieve or modify symptoms.

The organ of hearing lies in our inner ear (vestibulocochlear apparatus) and is also associated with the sense of balance. If the myelin sheaths of the nerve cells originating from the vestibulocochlear apparatus are affected, vertigo will result. Apart from regular MS medicines, Vestibulocochlear stabilizing agents like cinnarizine or betahistine might be needed. Since these are prescription medicines you might need to visit a doctor to get these prescribed.

You would have to take symptomatic medicines for diarrhea and nausea. ORS (oral rehydration solution), prilosec (omeprazole) and some antiemetic like meclizine needs to be taken.

Immunotherapy for MS may consist of agents like Ocrelizumab, interferon beta-1b, Mitoxantrone, Fingolimod or Teriflunomide. You would need to get clinically evaluated by your treating doctor prior to that.

Let me know if I could help further.
