What Causes Watery Stool And Lack Of Appetite During Teething?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Infections likely during teething
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Children start teething from 6 months of age and it continues till much later. During the initial phase, the child has a tendency to bite on anything and everything since biting soothes the sore gums. This could lead to gastrointestinal infections which manifest with passage of loose stools. Such infections are mostly self containing but unless you replenish for the salt and water lost, the child may go into dehydration. Give the child ORS (oral rehydration solution) prepared by mixing a full XXXXXXX in designated amount of water (200ml or 1 litre depending upon the size of the sachet) and give it sip by sip. Feeding to be continued as usual. It is common for children not to feed well if the child is not well. Antibiotics are not usually required. The frequency of passing stool should come down in a few days. Milk needs to be avoided for a week but plenty of curd is to be given.
Periodic deworming with Syrup Bandy (albendazole) 5 ml single dose repeated at yearly intervals is also advisable for babies of this age.
However, you need to visit a doctor immediately if the child is lethargic or if the frequency of passage of urine comes down as it can indicate dehydration requiring to be treated with intravenous saline infusion.
Hope that helps. Hope for a quick recovery for your daughter.
Regards
