Brief Answer:
Do you want to know why or how to prevent it?

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM. Monitoring of body weight when choosing a medication should always be taken into consideration. A clinician can use other drugs that do not cause weight gain if he thinks it will benefit you in the same manner as the drug you are on.

The reason why seroquel causes weight gain can be multifactorial, but is generally due to alteration in the regulation of appetite hormones or may decrease energy metabolism. If Depakote causes a great deal of weight gain some psychiatrists switch over to topiramate, for example.

Everyone is different as well. What one drug does for another may not do it to you.

Keep exercising to keep metabolism up. Eat a healthy, calorie controlled diet. As long as you are on Seroquel a battle with weight will be a daily occurrence.
I am sorry. Antidepressants of the SSRI category can cause less weight gain. Recommending the proper drug regime is complicated and must come through your psychiatrist. Ask him to be switched to a drug with less weight gain complications, if possible. XXXXXXX Shattler, MS,RDN

Brief Answer:
Of course, you can do anything you want to do

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Put your mind to it and you can lose that weight. A vigorous exercise routine and calories appropriate to lose weight would be necessary. One thing with these medications is to stay away from those carbohydrates and alcohol.

Look up high glycemic foods and try to avoid them. Also no fried foods, lower fat intake, cut portions in half and take a multivitamin.

If the doctor chooses an alternative medication at any time in your treatment, nortriptyline and amitrptyline cause less of a problem with weight, but never alter your medications on your own.

Remember, you can do anything you put your mind to. I think the key to the weight gain with Seroquel is the increased intolerance to carbohydrates and an increase in hunger. Don't eat three hours before bedtime and eat a protein source for breakfast.

These are some hints on dealing with weight gain on Seroquel. I hope I have been thorough. Good luck with everything. If you are finished with your questions, please rate and close out. Thank you for allowing me to assist you. Sincerely, XXXXXXX Shattler, MS,RDN
