What Causes White Stringy Discharge In Stool When Suffering From Constipation?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Aug 2014
Question: Felt constipated for last two weeks. Had still been going to toilet but only small stools came out. Today however I have had a normal sized stool, however it looks a orange colour in parts and has lots of white/clear string in it. Is this worms ? The white stringy things don't move, almost look like very thin thread. I've now had my second stool today and the same thing has happened again

Brief Answer:
Picture of stool is needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The white stringy thing you noted in your stool might be:
- fiber
- parasite

To exclude intestinal parasites, should run examination of stool for ova/parasites. However, to my opinion, it seems to be fiber as you have been suffered of constipation for 2 months now.

You can send a picture of the stringy thing for further evaluation1

With regards easing constipation, I advise to:
- increase water intake
- take laxatives to induce bowel movements
- take fiber supplements to increase stool bulk
- take lactulose to soften the stool

Psyllium is an excellent choice as a combination laxative+fiber supplement (Mutamucil). You can try it if you haven't tried it yet.

- Physical activity can also help

Hope it answered to your queries! Looking forward to have the requested picture in!

Hi i don't have a picture. I was only constipated for 2 weeks not two months. The stool seemed brown in parts and also a orange sort of colour. How can i tell the orange colour is not blood ? Why would it be this strange colour. I have not had any black stools

Brief Answer:
Constipation&/foods you consume as possible causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

No matter for the picture; sorry for the typo error (of 2 months instead of 2 weeks).

The stool color changes according to:
- foods you eat (carrots, sweet potatoes, etc.)
- food artificial coloring
- bowel movement

In your case, having brown and orange mixed colored stool is normal, and nothing to be worried about. You are not reporting:
- black stools
- diarrhea
- fever

or any other health problem other than constipation. So, with what you are saying, it can't be blood.

You need to check for hemorrhoids. Constipation can lacerate the anal mucus, causing hemorrhoids and associated bleeding.

Once again, the changes in the stool color are due to constipation and/or foods you are consuming.

Hope it answered to your queries!
