What Causes White Tongue?
Question: hi there, Ive had a white tongue for a year now. It lookslike a white greyish color that coats my whole tongue. Hard to brush off. All of it wont brush off. The center of my tongue brushes fine. not the back or the sides. I took 5 hiv test, and oral surgeon said it didnt look like oral cancer. What started all thiswas a rough tooth, and that toothhas been gone for a while. but tongue wont clear up. It doesnt look like cottage cheesse. It lookslike a plaque coating, rough. Hiv where alll negative too.pap smear clean. The only problem I have is a hormone imbalance. Does any of this make sence? I do smoke, and drink beer here and there. At the time of this happening I was on bacterum, doxcycline, and cephlaxin for cystic acne last summer do to hormones. then my crown came off and created a rough texture against my tongue. the tooth and the antibiodics stopped all at the same time. so i dont know what caused this. I dont knowif it was the tooth or the meds.all I know is that it wont go away . I do have a swollen gum on the right side too , that wont deflate. I have gained too much weight in the last year too, which is not normal for me. I grew a spare tire around my waste. Oh yeah, and my tongue also has a lit burning sensation to it. ok, so i gave you 2 pics. one looks good after morning brushing, and the other at the end of the day
Brief Answer:
Its due to faulty crown & poor hygiene.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing in.
It seems to be due to faulty crown because rough margins create trauma on tongue.
Second reason seems to be poor oral hygiene & improper brushing & tongue scraping.
Third reason can be hormonal imbalance.
If your gums are also swelling it could be due to poor hygiene leading to gingival inflammation & if this swelling is localized it could be due to some decayed tooth.
You need to visit dentist & get proper diagnosis done.
Also for scaling & start using 0.2% chlorhex mouthwash once daily,
Hope I answered your query
Wishing you good health

Hi there again. I have great oral hygiene . I always brush 3 times a day with therabreath toothpaste and rinse
The tooth that have the issue was removed
This condition is very white in the morning, then I brush teeth and tongue very well. I gargle salt water while I'm in the shower, and it looks ok. As the day goes on it starts to progress being the worst at night. I also forgot to mention that my sinus have been the worst . Flem and drainage into back of my throat like a creek. No headaches from sinus issue just constant spitting the crap out

Brief Answer:
Go for biopsy.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
If your hygiene is good & even faulty prosthesis is removed then you need to go for biopsy.
It can be:-
- leukoplakia
- oral candidiasis
- lichen planus
- syphilis
Just to rule out the exact diagnosis, you need to go for biopsy.
As such sinus problem has no relation with white coated tongue.
Consult your dentist & get it treated.
