Thanks for your question.

ESR = Erythrocyte ( Red Blood Cells) Sedimentation Rate as is called has no diagnostic value at all. The high rate of 89 just indicates that the patient may be suffering from some chronic disorder/ disease.

It has a more important role in getting a knowledge, whether the patient is responding to a certain treatment for a given diagnosed disease/ disorder. For this the ESR is done on a follow-up basis. If this is reducing on consecutive investigations, it indicates that the patient is responding well to the treatment.

Please understand it has more of a ''prognostic '' value than the diagnostic. ESR alone also has no diagnostic value unless the investigations are done for a diagnosis of a particular disease.

I hope other investigations must have been done as per the clinical history and findings of your Husband by your treating Doctor.
