What Do Bumps On Back Of The Tongue Indicate?
Question: Hello, I have a couple bumps on the side of my tongue and underneath the tip that just showed up.One was hurting yesterday and my tongue is white and my teeth are in pretty bad shape. Should I be seriously concerned? The bump under the tip of my tongue I can still feel this morning. The bumps on side I can feel today if I put my finger there but aren't presently hurting?
Brief Answer:
Consult dentist if it doesn't subside in 7 days
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing in.
Bumps on back of tongue are known as papillae & they are natural.
In case they are painful & inflamed, then it can be due to various reasons:-
-trauma
-allergy
-canker sores
-throat infection
-leukoplakia
-scarlet fever
In your case it might be due to traumatic bite as you told your teeth are bad shape.White tongue can be due to poor oral hygiene.
For temporary relief you may apply topical anesthetic gel like dologel 2-3times a day.
Take multivitamin daily & include green vegetables in your diet.
If it doesn't resolve within a week, then consult dentist.
Hope I answered your query.
Wishing you good health

These bumps are on the side not the back so does that make a difference?? and what is leukoplakia???? Thank you
Brief Answer:
It can be due to sharp teeth
Detailed Answer:
Hi
It can be due to some sharp teeth which may lead to ulcer on lateral surface of tongue.
Just apply dologel as i told you.
Leukoplakia is whitish patch on tongue& its precancerous condition.
If it doesn't clean by tongue cleaner, then get it diagnosed by dentist.
