What Do Cramps While On Duvadilan During Pregnancy Suggest?

default
Posted on Fri, 14 Aug 2015
Question: Hi , i am 6 weeks pregnant and my doctor suggested use of Duvadilan retard from 4 week onwards, since i was getting crams ( similar to menstrual cramps in my legs and stomach). Its been 2 weeks since i have been taking this medicine and the cramps still happen, but only during the evening after 7pm onwards. FYI - there is no discharge or bleeding.
Should i continue taking this medicine. Are their any side effects.

Brief Answer:
Please provide more information, you should stop duvadilan

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I had gone through your question and I can understand your concern.

Looking at your description such cramps might be related to nutritional deficiency or fatigue.
In my opinion you might not require duvadilan retard so early in pregnancy because it is generally used to prevent preterm labour in later half of pregnancy. So you should stop it now.

Duvadilan ( isoxsuprine ) doesn't affect the growth of the baby but it may increase heart rate, changes in blood pressure and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Here I would like further information for better assessment and more conclusive advise.
since how long you have this problem?
If possible upload me the ultrasound report
Are you having nausea or vomiting ?
Intensity and exact site of abdominal cramps.

I would advise you to take folic acid and multivitamin especially vitamin B 12 and calcium supplements.
In addition to that have well balanced diet, green leafy vegetables and lots of fresh fruits, plenty of fluids 2.5 to 3 liters per day, avoid stress and anxiety and remain cheerful and happy.
I hope you will find my response informative and helpful Please feel free to ask if anything is not clear.
wishing you good health and successful motherhood.
Regards

Hi Doctor,

thank you for your answer.

I have been having this since the 4th week. But the cramps started 2 days before my missed period, so in total 3 weeks since i ma having these cramps.
I am having nausea, but no vomiting. But nausea is not very strong and lime helps cure it.

The cramps as mentioned increase late in the evening, once i am back from work and relaxed ( i have more a managerial job, so not a lot of moving around or physical exertion). It is more like shooting cramps that keep coming and going. Around the lower abdomen and thighs.

I dont have an ultrasound yet, as the local doctor advised to get it done after 8 weeks.

I am having almost 4-5 liters of water everyday, since my thirst has gone up tremendously.

There is not a lot of stress, but as much as any regular work has, shall try and reduce that as well. My B-12 checkup happened an year ago and it is just borderline. There is deficiency of D3 only. Since its very early i am not taking any supplements and waiting for 12 weeks to complete and then start wiht anything ( as per the doctor). Folic acid, i have been having since last 12 days.

Brief Answer:
go for ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
Hello
welcome again and thanks for all the details

In my opinion you should go for ultrasound not only for confirmation of intrauterine sac but also for early identification of any malformations.

In my opinion you should take all the essential supplements as all these are required for growth and development of a growing baby.

You can take tab doxinate (doxylamine with pyridoxine) for nausea/vomiting associated with pregnancy.

You should do exercise regularly as much you can do comfortably do. Exercise increases your energy, helps you sleep better at night, maintains your good mood, reduces muscle cramps and low back pain.

So you should stop duvadilan and take all essential supplements including calcium Vitamin D3, B 12 and folic acid.
you should take salt and sugar or fruit juices to avoid electrolytic imbalances.
In case of unbearable cramps, you can discuss with your doctor about metaxalone after assessing risk benefit ratio
Hope this helps you
Please do let me know if you have any more doubts.I will be happy to help you
Best wishes
Regards
