What Do Hazy Urine Along With Presence Of Epithelial Cells Suggest?
Information
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
When a urine sample has epithelial cells in it, that means that it was not a "clean catch" sample so the rest of it is hard to make any interpretation from. Epithelial cells are skin cells. If the outer genitalia is not separated adequately when trying to catch the urine sample, then the urine passes over the skin of the genitals and picks up skin cells (epithelial cells). So the mucus that is present is also likely to be from the genitals rather than from the bladder.
Having 3+ epithelial cells means that there were a lot of skin cells in it.
In terms of it being hazy, that can be from an infection but it can also just be from the mucus and skin cells that were picked up by the urine because it wasn't a "clean catch" (in other words, the urine passed over the skin of the outer genitalia).
If you need to have an accurate urinalysis done, then I recommend doing a repeat urine test. If you do it again, try to separate the outer genitalia with your fingers and keep it away from the urine stream. That will allow for a more accurate sample that doesn't have "contamination" with skin (epithelial) cells.
I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further clarification.
