Posted on Tue, 9 Feb 2016
Question: 3 weeks ago i had spots of blood in my sputum. I did x ray normal, I did sputum culture which showed presence of streptococcus infection. I took augumentin 1000 twice dailyx5days. blood spots have reduced but can still see blood spots /streaks while coughing in the morning 2-3 times. rest of the day I dont see any blood while coughing. Area around throat seems inflamed but no difficulty in swallowing anything. No fever. very light cough. Only one or two spots of blood in the first 1-2 sputum. Have lost my sleep over it. Advise.

Brief Answer:
You need further antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
You seem to have developed Streptococcal Pneumonia and this usuall requires antibiotics for at least 10 days.
Blood in sputum is part of Pneumonia only and a cough suppressant like Codeine should be taken.
Once the infection gets cure, the healing of the lung tissue further takes time of around 2-3 weeks so blood in sputum can be seen at that time also.
I would recommend you to see your doctor, and get the antibiotics prescribed again for further 1 week duration along with Cough suppressants.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
