What Do Lack Of Appetite And Painful Swallowing Indicate Post Bowel Resection?
Question: My dad is in the hospital recovering from a bowel resection. His bowels have returned to normal function (he has an illiostomy bag for now), but his appetite is not coming back. It's been several days. He's very week, and he says it hurts when he swallows food (which is diminishing his desire to eat and keeping him weak.
Brief Answer:
different possible causes
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
There are different possibilities such as: (1) trauma to the throat from intubation during surgery, this can be associated with discomfort.
This would decrease with time if present.
(2) in older persons, because of the diminished immune system, thrush in the mouth and throat can also occur which can also present with pain
This would require anti fungal medications along with pain relief
(3)some persons can get a coincidental acute infection such as sore throat (pharyngitis)
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

So his tube came out over a week ago - thinking it would have improved by now if that were the cause of the pain. My sister, who is a nurse practitioner, mentioned possibly thrush. She did take a look at his throat with her light and didn't see anything visible in the back of his mouth (as far as she could see). She is going to talk with his doctors tomorrow. I will mention the pharyngitis to her. Thanks for your advice!
