What Do Muscle Pain, Chills And Hot Spells After Scratch On Arm By Our Dog Suggest?
Question: my husbAND AGE 67 Was scratched on the arm my our dog. scratch loooks only a little red. but he is weak and shakey and having chills and then hot spells. he says he is hurting all over muscle aches

I appreciate your concern
As rabies does not have any cure, vaccination should be advised for all suspicious exposures. Transmission is likely in case of an infected / unvaccinated animal bite and rare through scratch wounds. However , it is a possibility. Active vaccination on day 0.3,7,14 and 28 should be done to be on the safe side. Rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) can also be given at the scratch site if the exposure was recent. T.T (Tetanus Toxoid) vaccine should also be administered and a course of Augmentine should be started to avoid or treat any infection from the scratch site.
The fever , chills could be related to the scratch site getting infected. Clean the area with povidone solution and apply triple antibiotic like Neosporin on the scratched region.
