What Do My Endoscopy Test Results Indicate?

Question: Hello I am a twenty five year old male and I am having trouble swallowing. I went and had an endoscopy done. Here are the results. Normal mucosa in the duodenum. Erythema in the stomach body and antrum. Grade A esophagitis in the gastroesophageal junction. It says otherwise normal EGD to second part of duodenum. My biopsy results said there were no significant pathologic changes in my stomach or esophagus. I tested negative for H. pylori. I am also recovering from pneumonia right now. I have anxiety which can make it difficult to swallow sometimes I know. Right now I have extreme tightness in my throat right below my XXXXXXX apple. I also have a sharp pain in the chest sometimes when I swallow. I would find it hard to believe that something is stuck in my throat or esophagus because I chew everything until it is almost liquid and I swallow every bite with water. It does not seem to affect my breathing. I have not regurgitated any food or water but it feels like it is stuck in my chest. I started carafate liquid yesterday. I wondered if this could be some sort of spasm causing the pain and tightness. I am also having chest pain with it. I have the drug lorazepam and wondered if I should take to see if it relaxes my muscles. Do you think I should go to the ER or wait it out. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Globus pharyngeus

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Upper GI endoscopy has been done and it has ruled out any obstruction in the esophagus. So there is no need to worry.

The feeling of something stuck in the throat is called Globus phraynegeus . Gastroesophageal reflux is one of the causes.
You have other sign of reflux in the form of esophagitis.

You need not go to ER or take Lorazepam for this.

Take Nexium, once a day before breakfast for 4 weeks.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K

Hello, and thanks for your reply. Why am I suddenly having the sharp chest pain again when I swallow. Just to be clear there is no possibility that food or liquid is getting stuck in my throat or esophagus. Won't the carafate that I am on do the same thing as nexium? When do you think the sharp chest pain will go away? It feels like I am having a hard time taking a deep breath but I think it is my anxiety.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Esophagitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The chest pain while swallowing is due to esophagitis which is confirmed by endoscopy.

No Nexium and carafate have different actions.

For complete healing you need to take Nexium for 4 weeks.

Dr.R.K.
